Guiding
Impression:
In a moment, we will cover the impression
specifics. The purpose of the Guiding
Impression is to provide the general rules
that will help us craft a unit impression
that is both historically accurate and
meets the interpretive goals and
objectives of the living history program.
These guidelines will help craft the unit
impression and the specifics will help you
with your individual impression.
Non-specific: We are portraying the
“typical” Federal infantyman at the Battle
of the Wilderness. Since we are
portraying a number of units we will need
to keep our impressions somewhat general.
Whether you wish to call it PEC, generic,
or non-descript, that is the general
guideline. As such, we will be avoiding
unit-specific uniform/equipage items and
things like unit numbers, company letters,
etc... Remember, while we are portraying
specific units at different battlefield
sites, we are portraying the typical
Federal soldier on the Overland Campaign
of 1864. (Note: this guideline does not
apply to those who have been asked by the
organizer to portray a specific individual
or unit.)
We will not be wearing any corps badges
since we are portraying troops from
various corps.
Uniformity: The organizers would
like the group to look like one unit. As
such, we would like the unit impression to
err on the side of uniformity.
Wear:
The Army of the Potomac would have been
fairly well-supplied at this point since
we are in the opening stages of the
campaign. Obviously, the typical Federal
soldier going into the Wilderness would
look very different in terms of dirt and
wear than the one who went out!. Clothing
and equipage should be in generally good
condition with some wear and tear being
appropriate. We aren't looking for ragged
troops but we aren't looking for band box
soldiers either. Private purchase and
issue items in good condition are
appropriate. Also, since we are generally
portraying veteran units, well-executed
field-altered items are also appropriate.
Wear your best stuff. When putting
together your individual impression,
please plan to wear your best pieces. If
you have two acceptable items and one is a
more accurate reproduction than the other,
please wear that item. Of course, it goes
without saying that all items should be
correct in terms of materials, pattern,
and construction.
