On May 5th to 6th, 2007, within the confines of the Wilderness Battlefield, part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, living historians will present a snapshot of the average Federal soldier engaged in The Battle of Wilderness, May 5th and May 6th, 1864.  Through the use of several programs and vignettes, located throughout the Wilderness Battlefield site, both the public and living history participant, will gain an understanding of what soldiers from the North endured during this engagement.  This weekend program will begin on Saturday morning, May 5th, and conclude on Sunday afternoon, May 6th.  Ironically, this event will be held on the EXACT dates of the original battle 143 years ago.  This event is for one thing and one thing only:  To honor those men, North and South, who fought at this engagement.

One of the goals of this event is to aid in gathering local attention to the Wilderness Battlefield.   In the past few years, commercial and residential growth in the area has brought development to the very boundaries of the Wilderness Battlefield.  Additionally, there has been a proposal by a local governmental entity to increase or build another major road through this site.  In conjunction with the local preservation group, Friends of the Wilderness Battlefield, as well as other “larger” preservation groups, this event will assist in saving this threatened area.  Therefore, the $10 registration fee for this event will be donated in the name of preservation to the Civil War Preservation Trust to help save this battlefield.

The host units for this living history are the  the Southern Guard Living History Association (SGHLA) and the Columbia Rifles (CR).  At current time we are anticipating the number of participants to from either two or more companies.  The core structure will consist of two companies, centered on the main host units; one company consisting of Columbia Rifles and one company consisting of Southern Guard.
