SGLHA Vendor List

By Rob Hallock (Chair 2001-2) and Joe Loehle (Chair 2003)
SGLHA Procurement Committee

This list includes those vendors whose products meet the high standards of authenticity as established by the SGLHA. The authenticity of an item and overall vendor rating is determined by the quality of materials and patterns/designs used in the reproduction, as well as the quality of construction in the product. In addition, a vendor needs to demonstrate consistent availability of his/her goods in order to be included in this list. While availability has no bearing on the authenticity of an item, it does serve as a prerequisite for inclusion here, which should correct the previous problem of having a vendor list filled with unobtainable good.

It is also important to note the differences between the sources listed here and those contained in the resource and vendor lists of other hardcore/progressive/authentic units. Other units tend to include as many acceptable sources as possible in order to provide their memberships with a variety of choices and options based on price, availability, and varying degrees of authenticity. While this logic is perfectly understandable for certain units, the goal of this list is to provide members with the contact information and notes on the BEST sources currently available.

Unfortunately, several of the best vendors of particular items are no longer in business or have extremely limited availability, which has created the need to examine closely the goods of new and developing craftsmen. As a result, this list contains separate categories for "secondary market vendors," or those whose goods have been approved by the SGLHA in the past as well as the present but are no longer readily available and must be sought through the used market, as well as "potential future resources," or those whose products do not meet the current standards of the SGLHA, but demonstrate effort at research and workmanship and will certainly be reconsidered in the future as their skill develops.

Finally, this list deals with resources for clothing, headgear, footwear, accoutrements, and equipage. The endorsed vendor's name, or the name of the business will appear next to each category. The vendors' available contact information will appear at the end of the list. The next phase of the vendor list will include resources for ordnance, personal items, and specialty items, as well as more in-depth reviews and explanations of both endorsed and rejected gear.

These choices are NOT arbitary and are do NOT show favoritism towards anyone. The selections made are based off examination of original artifacts. In many instances we have been helped by the preeminent experts of their respected fields in helping us make these decisions. If any vendor does not see their name listed, we would be happy to discuss this with you and how we believe you could improve your products. We sincerely hope that we do not sound elitist or snobby.

Clothing

Confederate Impressions:

Shell Jackets:
1. County Cloth -- Charlie Childs is the best of the best in terms of materials, patterns, and construction. The SGLHA is extremely lucky that County Cloth is once again offering finished goods on a regular basis. He makes every type of jacket a SG member would ever need. Richmond Depot, Columbus Depot, North Carolina, Charleston Depot, Peter Tait, Four Button, Department of Alabama, etc.

2. Cotton City Tailors -- Becky Nall can be considered for Western theater jackets not offered by Charlie. Keep in mind that we rarely attend western theater themed events, and the price (if County Cloth fabrics are used) is about the same as a jacket from Charlie.
