2004 Vendor List

SGLHA Procurement Committee

In recent years a massive influx of purportedly ‘authentic’ vendors have entered Civil War reenacting circles, primarily using the Internet as a means of getting out their product. With so many individuals jumping on board the “Hardcore” wagon in the past few years it has been increasingly hard to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to vendors.  Many of the new suppliers are young and inexperienced and last only a matter of months before calling it quits. Some make their goods in their spare time and cannot keep up with demand or quality.

Vendor List

In addition, the Internet has driven a rise in the number of reenactors who consider themselves to be “authentic.” Some vendors have recognized this and have seen fit to lower quality and increase output to sell goods to the increased numbers of customers.

It is very important to be deliberate when purchasing new items and making sure the manufacturers are either on the SGLHA vendor list, or are endorsed by the Procurement Committee.   Otherwise, we will have members that will be drawn into this trap and end up with items that do not meet our standards.

This vendor list includes those companies/individuals whose products meet the high standards of authenticity established by the SGLHA. The authenticity of an item and overall vendor endorsement is determined by the quality of materials and patterns/designs used in the production, as well as the quality of construction in the product. In addition, a vendor needs to demonstrate consistent availability of their goods in order to be included in this list. While availability has no bearing on the authenticity of an item, it does serve as a prerequisite for inclusion here.

We have made the decision to include for each item only the top tier vendor(s). The reasoning behind this is that new recruits who use this list should rely on a ‘safe bet’ when purchasing items.   It is true that some vendors make a wide array of goods.  Many times though not everything one vendor sells is of the same quality, especially today due to factors prior mentioned.   The layout for each item will list the top vendor, the contact info, and a commentary of why it is being endorsed.    While you may not see every vendor that offers ‘authentic’ goods within the contents of this list, you should be assured that purchasing from those listed for specific goods will not be questioned.  On the other hand, not following this vendor list may result in inferior products entering our organization’s impressions.  Remember your impression reflects on the reputation of the entire unit.  If you have any questions on whether or not a specific vendor or item is suitable for purchase please contact the Procurement Committee with your questions!

The member of the Procurement Committee are not in any way trying to target any single individual or business with the statements in this discourse.   Rather we are trying to provide education and protection our membership from the factors in the current marketplace.  These choices are NOT arbitrary and do NOT show favoritism towards anyone. The selections made are based off examination of original artifacts. If any vendor does not see their name listed, we would be happy to discuss this with you and how we believe you could improve your products.

In closing, if you are a member, recruit or subscriber and have ANY questions about a particular vendor or item, please, please, PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO ASK!!!

Step 1:Jarnigan blank (Item #               www.jarnaginco.com
Step 2: Jeancloth cover
Step 3: LD Haning Leather Sling                     www.ldhaning.com
Step 4: Simple twine cording for ‘stopper chain’.

Vendor:
Step 1:Jarnigan blank                          www.jarnaginco.coM
Step 2: Jeancloth cover
Step 3: Wooded Hamlet Twill Sling    www.woodedhamlet.com
Step 4: Simple twine cording for ‘stopper chain’.

Commentary: Federal canteens can be tricky.   Most ‘authentic’ reproductions today are ‘tin dipped’.  Original tinware was as well, however, a lot of these reproductions are made with metals which are too heavy/thick when compared to originals.     Coupled with an additional tin coating, you end up toting around an inauthentic weight canteen.   It is best to stick with a Jarnagin canteen which are relatively inexpensive and well made (Step 1).   Cover it with a canteen cover from jeancloth, kersey or satinette.  Make sure and use a grey or brown color, canteens were covered with scraps at the arsenal, and the Coates research indicates that grey & brown were most common.  Make sure that when you attach the cover to the canteen that the lower half is machine sewn while the upper half is hand overcast (Step 2).   For a sling go with a leather sling with smoothside 1858 pattern canteens from LD Haning, and for the “Bullseye” 1862 Pattern canteen use a cotton twill strap.  The most authentic twill tape for these is available from Wooded Hamlet Designs (Step 3).   After completing these steps find a length twine/jute cording and attach your cork stopper to the canteen.  Or a chain for a New York Depot style (Step 4). Until a more perfect repro comes along this is the most authentic option.

Federal Shelter Halves:
Vendor:  CJ Daley Historical Reproductions / Chris Daley
Contact:  www.cjdaley.com  /  tailor@cjdaley.com
Commentary: The preferred style for the SGLHA with the most versatility is the Type IIa (Gaede) style shelter.  This shelter style is made from three vertical panels of cotton drill, has bone buttons and has hemp peg loops and guy lines.   Most of the later cotton ‘duck’ Type III style tents with metal buttons did not begin being used till well into 1864 so the Type IIa offered by Daley is the way to go.
